Gwyneth Paltrow was born in Los Angeles, California to Bruce Paltrow and Blythe Danner. Her father is a television producer and her mother is a Tony Award winning actress. She made her stage debut when she was five in a theater in Massachusetts' Berkshire Mountains. She spent her summers there while her mother acted in summer stock theater. Paltrow attended the Spence School before enrolling in the University of California to study Art History. She left school to pursue her acting career. Her first role had been as young Wendy in the film HOOK. She had a succession of roles in film, but it was not until she started dating Brad Pitt that her name rose to fame. The two became engaged in 1996, but Pitt broke off the engagement the following year. Her real success in show business came in 1998 when she starred in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. She won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.
