Green Bridesmaid Dresses Biography

April and Joseph are biologists, so they are very cognizant of eco-responsibility and sustainability. Their lives as single individuals already incorporated an understanding that they needed to protect Mother Nature, so it only seemed natural that as they formed their life together they honored Mother Nature in their uniting of one.

April is not a native San Diegan, however they have lived there now for almost 10 years. She wanted to share with their family and friends the reason why they had decided to call San Diego home, and why they loved it so much. The venue needed to exhibit the epitome of San Diego.

When looking for a venue, they knew since they had everyone flying in that they wanted a venue that would automatically transport them to a Zen Eden retreat, and encapsulate their guests with tranquility, love, and appreciation of what Mother Nature had to offer. Julio Fonyat of Spotlight Studios captured their amazing day in these beautiful shots.

Since so many were flying in, they also blocked rooms where a car was not needed, and the hotels provided transportation to and from the airport, venue, and other local attractions. Both the ceremony and reception was in one location to minimize the carbon footprint of gas. They live about 5 minutes from the Japanese Friendship Garden, and frequent Balboa Park and the Zoo almost weekly (they are members – and it’s their cheap/free date outings). They took one look at the garden and knew it was the place. They couldn’t wait to share this with their loved ones on their special day.

Seating arrangements for guests consisted of an old repurposed room divider, painted with a pretty wedding yellow color and chalk board paint, with handwritten names and table names for guests to read.

Place card holders were handmade from a Eucalyptus tree branch that had fallen off in their yard from the winter winds and collected. Recycled paper was placed in the slits in the wood using the Cricut for place cards.

All of the table names were a nod to surf spots in San Diego from North to South, homemade with wood from Home Depot and Modge Podge.

April and Joe decided on a certain color scheme for their wedding and their flowers complemented these colors beautifully. April knew she wanted slate gray with a pop of marigold yellow, all surrounded by sunset kissed florals. April still remembers the scent of her bouquet with hints of gardenia, tuberose, and garden rose. "I remember receiving my bouquet and suddenly everything felt real. Before the nerves and anxiety could set in, the scent of my bouquet soothed me and brought me back to that post yoga-like feeling I had all day."

The bridal bouquet was made up of tuberose, white ranuncula, blushing bride protea, cafe au lait dahlias, lizianthus, katalaya, gardenia and green eye garden rose. Their florist, Amy Samuel of The Flower Shop was careful to use local florals as much as possible. Many of them were drought tolerant and the couple were able to plant them in their "wedding garden."

April and Joe made sure to pay respects to their family. Pre-ceremony they had a first look with dad, and a traditional lei presentation of the groom to the father of the bride and grandfather. A presentation of a locket with the groom’s late father was included to ensure he was with them on their special day.

Several of the bride's accessories were handmade by her mother, including the hand-beaded belt, something blue garter, and bird cage veil. April also incorporated her "Something Borrowed" from her younger sister’s blusher veil, and her "Something Old" from her grandmother’s engagement ring from the 1930s.

The bridesmaids carried bouquets with vibrant yellows, crisp fresh white, orange and a splash of purple. A single fiddlehead fern peeked out of the top of the flower arrangement to match the fiddlehead accent on the wedding cake.

Their choice of caterer was important, as they are farm-to-table and utilized sustainable resources. In addition to their fabulous food, they also do philanthropic work with the community involved in the Slow Food movement and local farms in the area.

Every single detail of April and Joe's wedding was color coordinated. You can make everything a little greener, too--right down to your cupcake wrappers! Avie Designs partially recycles all of their products and only provides the highest quality paper goods.

The cake cutter and server went back two generations to the groom’s parents, and the Mother of the Groom’s parents.  This was a special heirloom to have on their special day.

If you don't happen to have an heirloom cake cutter, consider using a serving set made from sustainable materials. Roxy Heart Vintage uses only fallen trees for their products. They also use only natural methods to dry and preserve the materials and strive to recycle and reuse whenever possible during their manufacturing process.

April and Joe were very hands on in the designing of their Sweetheart Table. They purchased wooden "Mr. and Mrs." signs from a local craft store and painted the letters themselves. After the wedding, they reused the sign, hanging it over the fireplace in their home. The sign was surrounded by local flowers that added a pretty color palette to the blue and yellow paint.

April and Joe had their florist design three different centerpieces using unconventional flowers. This made it look like an underwater adventure. They also wanted the florals to whisk guests away to another place not just with beautiful underwater-like floral displays, but also envelope them with wonderful scents and bring a sense of calm.

The Pin Cushion Protea was a vibrant centerpiece display, plus it's long tendrils were reminiscent of a sea anemone.

Center pieces consisted of succulents, pin cushion protea, berzillia, jade roses, fern curls (or monkey tails), lavender roses, lambs ear and dusty miller (greyish colored filler green), ranunculas, dianthus, all in a bed of hand tied birch sticks.

The floral centerpieces and bouquets were definitely the highlight of April and Joe's wedding decor. If you want your guests to take away a little something from your wedding, consider giving them the gift of tree seeds in a beautiful glass keepsake jar, or give them plantable favors that will grow the same flowers featured at your wedding!

These keepsake jars can even be personalized with the bride and groom's initials on the metal charm tags. It's such a unique and intimate favor.

April and Joe definitely know how to kick back and have a good time and it was obvious in their wedding! They placed cute sayings on the bottoms of their shoes and took some fun photo ops!

The most memorable moment of the ceremony for April was her bridal entrance through a walkway of swaying green bamboo, pink azaleas, and marigold flowers as guests watched her walk on the pebble stone path. They wanted to use music that created an easy, island vibe, and many guests commented on the music choice adding to the feeling of joy throughout the whole evening.

April and Joe had the wonderfully unique idea of saying "Thank You" by posing with a cute and quirky sign in a photo op. If you still want to go the traditional route, make sure your thank you cards are made from 100% post consumer waste (PCW) paper. If you can find invitations that are recycled and plantable, even better! These Daisy Thank You Cards have both.

The newlyweds wrote their own vows, and their officiant was their ex-CEO of the company where they met – her message to them was heartfelt and practical advice they took to heart. Their officiant was someone who knew them as individuals- personally and professionally, and loved them as a couple. She has spoken at many world renown biotech conferences, but it was cute to still see her nervous for our intimate wedding..
